Input costs are rising, procurement prices are going down, water levels are steadily decreasing, access to markets is becoming increasingly difficult; forget about turning a profit farmers are finding it impossible just to survive. In urban India where produce appears magically at the local wet market or on supermarket shelves we have absolutely no idea of the magnitude of the agrarian crisis unfolding in the country. The only hint we get of the problem is that we’re paying more and more for the basics; the truth, however, is far more frightening.
