Anthropologists study people. So do playwrights. They are able to capture an emotional truth rather than just a scientific truth. They can make the exotic, familiar; and the familiar, exotic. The work of both playwright and anthropologist is set against a specific backdrop or background. As the anthropologist documents peoples, rituals and traditions, the playwright communicates the complexities of human beings and behaviour. However, playwrights also have the responsibility to be truthful to the people they represent.
