Proust’s madeleines are famous for evoking memories of place and time. To feel, and then articulate, the aura of a place so that readers can feel themselves there, demands a very special use of words. Writers who can project the essence of nature, of urban and rural, of heat and cold, desert and plain, encountered in their travels, are justifiably world famous, their descriptions regarded as a literary art form.
