While the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which has become the global standard for affirming an individuals rights, is held to be a landmark document, it’s Western origin and bias has come in for much criticism. The Cairo Declaration on Human Rights and the Bangkok Declaration both offer alternative perspectives on the issue. Perhaps Human RIghts are not a universal idea but one that needs to be grounded in a cultural context.
