For a long time, many of India’s leaders thought of profit as a dirty word. Distrust of the world of business abounds everywhere, not helped by instances of bank scams, environmental degradation, and even human rights violations. Received wisdom was that hard business practices led to commercial success. But a new world order is demonstrating that concerned businesses that treat employees fairly, take environmental precautions and invest in the community, not only make, but also improve profits. Is it possible for capitalism to do better by the world? Can profits be made and spent ethically – or only up to a point?
